Enneagram Type 6: Stress And Growth
Stress and Comfort States
Individuals with a temperament type of 6 exhibit the negative characteristics of temperament type 3 when under stress, while they display the positive characteristics of temperament type 9 when in a state of comfort.
Causes of Stress
Due to their questioning, cautious nature and importance they place on feeling secure, Sixes experience stress when they feel inadequate, lack self-confidence, make mistakes, or are disappointed by the person they rely on for trust. Feeling insecure, having to make important decisions in uncertain situations, feeling unsupported and lonely, and situations getting out of control are all stress factors for Sixes.
When they are stressed, they initially exhibit anxious, pessimistic, hopeless reactions, and if stress continues for a long time, they transition to displaying the negative characteristics of temperament type 3.
At Stress Points Sixes
During periods of extreme stress, Sixes, who become accusatory, confrontational, and discordant, become extremely unhappy and avoid things that would bring them pleasure. Their attitude of examining and evaluating events from all angles gives way to looking at events from only their own perspective.
During intense periods of stress, they may try to hurt those who have hurt them with their words and may even consider causing physical harm.
The overly anxious, pessimistic, hopeless reactions they display at the onset of stress give way to aggressive, angry, and ambitious reactions as stress continues. During this period, they may direct their accumulated anger towards the person they blame, behave aggressively, and seek retribution if they have been harmed.
They try to find logical reasons to justify their reactions and thoughts during this period. They think quickly but arrive at unhealthy/wrong decisions. They try to remain constantly vigilant against dangers.
Factors Facilitating Growth
They feel relaxed when they feel safe, achieve mental tranquility, are approved by the individuals they trust, feel adequate and self-confident, and relax when they lose their duties and responsibilities. In comfortable situations, they display the positive characteristics of temperament type 9.
In Their Comfort Zones Sixes
Their controlling and cautious behaviors decrease, and they become more relaxed and calm individuals. They begin to let life take its course and feel strong against difficulties and dangers. They stop making plans for the future.
When in their comfort zones, they feel confident, act more compassionate, sensitive, and supportive towards others. They stop worrying about negatives, seek solutions, and display optimistic and calm behaviors.
They get rid of worrying thoughts and approach events and individuals more optimistically. In comfortable situations, they can make quick decisions and take action without the need for approval. They live more focused on the present, believing that everything is as it should be.
