Enneagram Type 7: Stress And Growth
Stress and Comfort States
Individuals with a temperament type of 7 exhibit the negative characteristics of temperament type 1 when under stress, while they display the negative characteristics of temperament type 5 when in a state of comfort.
Causes of Stress
For freedom-loving, cheerful, and novelty-seeking Sevens, stress arises from not getting what they want, restrictions on their freedom, narrowing of their scope of action, and their lives becoming boring and monotonous. Increased duties and responsibilities, having to cope with difficulties that never seem to end, or experiencing emotions such as pain and sorrow for prolonged periods, and high-discipline environments where they have to adhere to strict rules are stress factors for Sevens.
While they typically avoid distress and try not to disrupt their enjoyment, when stress persists, they initially display tense, reactive, dissatisfied, and unhappy behaviors. If stress continues for a longer period, they transition to exhibiting the negative characteristics of temperament type 1.
At Stress Points Sevens
When exposed to prolonged stress, Sevens become tense, judgmental, and aggressive. While they usually steer clear of tension and conflict, in stressful situations, they may not avoid confrontation and may even escalate conflicts, leading to arguments.
They may become rigid, controlling, and hurtful. While normally displaying constructive and optimistic behaviors, during this period, they may exhibit intolerant behaviors, fail to be constructive, see the negative side of events/situations, and exaggerate them.
Initially critical of themselves and later critical of others, they may attempt to belittle and demean those around them. They may use hurtful and offensive words and display a vindictive attitude.
As their flexible and relaxed attitudes give way to more rigid, critical behaviors, they may lose their flexibility in the face of rules, becoming more adherent to rules, establishing strict, disciplined boundaries for themselves. If others around them do not comply with the rules, they may respond with negative and harsh reactions.
Factors Facilitating Growth
They find relief when they feel liberated, safe, successful, and happy, and when their desires for excitement and pleasure are fulfilled.
In Their Comfort Zones Sevens
They begin to display measured and calm behaviors, turning inward rather than being outwardly energetic. Sevens, who normally dislike being alone and are constantly active, prefer to be alone and delve into their thoughts during this period. They become more reserved. They begin to think more rationally, logically and find it less challenging to focus. They have the opportunity to delve into the topics that interest them without distraction.
Instead of leaving tasks incomplete, they complete them and achieve results. A general state of stability is observed in their behavior. They become more determined, stable individuals, striving to set and achieve goals.
Their desire for excitement and pleasure decreases, and they move away from impulsive behaviors. Instead of avoiding negative emotions, they try to understand them and find solutions. Their insistent, impatient, and fussy behaviors to achieve what they want give way to patient and tolerant behaviors.
They evaluate their lives, themselves, events, and situations objectively and try to make correct decisions. They try to adhere to the decisions they make and strive to behave consistently.
They prefer a perspective of what is correct, objective, rather than a perspective of what is pleasurable or not, and make healthier decisions accordingly.
